Picture
“I like the outdoors and I like to have people appreciate what's there. Sometimes they don't look unless you paint a picture of it. People just walk by (in) their everyday life. They're too busy to stop and (notice).”
- Joanne S Scott
Resumé

Joanne S. Scott, painter, printmaker and poet was born in Brockton, MA in 1928 and has been painting in watercolor since she was a child. She attended Rhode Island School of Design in the late 40’s, married, had four children, was widowed, and returned to study printmaking in the early 80’s at the Maryland Institute of Art. As a young mother, she received awards in the Corcorran Gallery of Art and the Baltimore Museum of Art.  She held watercolor classes in her studio from 1985 until 1979 in Annapolis, MD.  It was at this time that she purchased a small cottage on Monhegan Island, Maine and began to teach an annual watercolor workshop and opened a small gallery.

Her involvement in arts has always been threefold: her painting and exhibiting; her teaching of watercolor and her involvement in art organizations.  She was instrumental in forming a county cultural center in Annapolis, the Maryland Hall for Creative Arts in 1981 and provided leadership for the same.

After completing her studies at MIA in 1983, she remarried and relocated to Princeton, NJ. Exhibiting extensively in watercolor and prints, she became involved in the directorship of the Printmaking Council of NJ, acquiring a large etching press to house in her studio/barn.  After a tour of duty with the PCNJ, she helped to put together and served as President of the community cultural center, 1860 House, in the Princeton area that opened in 1995.
Although there has been extensive and intensive time spent in the area of  arts organizations, Joanne has still managed to be productive and to continue to grow in her chosen media.  She has received significant national awards in many medias.  Her paintings and prints are in private and public collections regionally, nationally and abroad.
Joanne moved to Heron Point, Chestertown, MD in 2010 where she continues to paint, teach, and exhibit her art.
